Sharepoint is a web application platform developed by Microsoft. I appreciate the building blocks in SharePoint 2013 and how the building blocks can be put to good use to suit cases. The search in SharePoint gives users the ability to find relevant information faster and with ease and makes it easy for Search Administrator to enrich the Search experience with ease. This is done through the provision of several API sets to enhance customization and solutions.
Different SharePoint Search versions include different features including the ability to search within documents and across external data sources such as file systems, this is of course in exception of cloud services.

The improvement in SharePoint Search

User Interface Improvements include:

i). The ability to quickly identify useful results by resting the mouse pointer over the search result to preview the document content on the right side of the panel.

ii). Ease of distinguishing results based on on their type, for example site results display the top links that users usually click on the site.

iii). Certain related search results are displayed in groups called result blocks. This function is turned on by default, administrators can also create result blocks to group other results.
Search enables users to quickly navigate back to important site and documents by recalling what they had previously searched for and clicked. These are previously searched results and clicked sites are displayed as the query suggestions on top of the results page.The intent or satisfaction of the query is better achieved if the result,suggestion or recommendation meets the intent of the query.
Search in Sharepoint 2013 includes a broad scope of improvements and new features.

The search architecture consists of the following areas ;
– Crawl and Content Processing
– Index
– Query Processing
– Search Administration
– Analytics

These areas interact cohesively to perform the search operation.
1. Crawl and Content Processing The crawl content processing consists of:
-Crawl component
-Crawl database
-Content processing component.

Index Receives the content items from the content processing component and writes them to the search index and relays back the results set to query processing component.

3. Query Processing Analyzes and processes search queries and results. This is then submitted to the index component which returns a set of search results to the query.

4. Search Administration This is composed of the search administration component and its corresponding database.

5. Analytics This consists of the analytics processing component, analytic reporting database, link database and the events store.
Flexibility of Search SchemaThe search index stores the contents of the managed properties. The attributes of the managed properties determine the structure of the search index. Attributes of the managed properties include sort and refine. The sort-able attribute includes reduces the time that is required to return large search results set by sorting results before they are returned. The refine-able attribute enable you to create a refiner based on a particular managed property.

Custom Security TrimmingThis performs the security trimming of search results based on the user submitting the query, the query time, by using the security information obtained from the crawl component. You may also be required to implement custom security trimming . This may be achieved through the use of 2 interfaces; namely ISecurityTrimmerPre(for pre-query evaluation) and ISecurityTrimmerPost(for post-query evaluation).
Content Search Web PartThis is a web part that can display dynamic content that was previously crawled, and added to the search index. Each instance of a web part is associated with and displays the results for that particular search query.
Search Driven Mobile Apps.This uses Navigation and Event Logging REST Interfaces. These can be used to create search driven mobile apps for mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets that run operating systems other than windows. This allows the display of the product catalog in an alternative way instead of using a mobile channel.
